Mining Basics and Environmental Notes

When mining, refer to the following basic rules to improve efficiency:

  • Height Standard: All heights mentioned refer to the height at which the player stands while mining.
  • Chunk Borders: All ores (including Ancient Debris) have the highest probability of spawning large clusters at chunk borders.
  • Terrain Distribution Features:
    • Mountains: Often generate Iron, Coal, and Emerald.
    • Cliffs: Generate large amounts of Calcite.
    • Deepslate Caves: Suitable for finding exposed Diamond, Gold, and Redstone.

Optimal Mining Heights for Various Ores

  • Iron Ore: Best mining height is Y=16. Below Y=0, Iron Veins containing Tuff will generate.
  • Copper Ore: Best mining height is Y=48. Between Y=0 and Y=48, Copper Veins containing Granite will generate.
  • Gold Ore: Best mining height is Y=-16. In Badlands biomes, gold reserves are massive, with a distribution density comparable to Coal.
  • Diamond and Redstone: Best mining height is Y=-58. Considering frequent lava lakes at this height, mining at Y=-54 is recommended.
  • Emerald Ore: Best mining height is Y=232 (only in Mountain or Windswept Hills biomes).
  • Lapis Lazuli Ore: Best mining height is Y=0.
  • Deepslate Coal Ore: If you need to collect Deepslate Coal Ore, mining between Y=0 and Y=8 is recommended.
  • All-Ore Coverage Point: Height Y=8 generates all types of ores, but note the varying generation probabilities for each ore.

Nether Ore Mining Guide

  • Nether Quartz and Nether Gold Ore: Suitable for directly mining exposed ore in the Nether.
  • Ancient Debris: Best mining height is Y=14.
    • Biome Choice: Recommended to mine beneath Nether Wastes or Warped Forest biomes. Avoid Basalt Deltas, as the blocks there slow mining speed and reduce the effective explosion radius of beds.
    • Generation Pattern: Typically, one cluster containing 1-3 debris generates at the bottom of each chunk. After finding debris in a chunk, moving to a new chunk is more efficient.

Efficient Mining Techniques

  • Moss Clearing Method: Place Moss Blocks in Deepslate areas and use Bone Meal; the surrounding Deepslate will convert to Moss (ores will not convert). Using a Hoe allows for quick mining of Moss, enabling rapid surveying of large areas to find ores.
  • Inventory Space Management:
    • Using the Silk Touch enchantment can significantly save inventory space; mine the ores later at your base with a Fortune-enchanted tool.
    • If you don't have Silk Touch, you can craft ores into Ore Blocks to save space (except for Nether Quartz).
